The international feature of this event gets even more real, having this year Japanese and South African representation.

LA SIDRA.-The seventh edition of the International Hall of Gala Ciders will be without any doubt the most international of the current editions, since apart of the usual wide European participation, this year there will also be representation from Japan (Tamura Farm) and South African (Sxollie Cider). There will also be some other surprise we will announce.

This cider mill, Sxollie, is from Cape Town and makes cider from apples sourced from the cool orchards of Elgin, with the fresh juice fermented in stainless steel tanks. Champagne yeasts are used to ensure an elegant flavour profile before careful bottling and carbonation that delivers a delicate sparkle to the final product. The result is a light easy-drinking sessionable cider that captures the essence of the fruit.

The eye-catching ‘X’ mosaic emblazoned across the bottle is inspired by pottery designs synonymous with southern Africa, yet also offers a nod to our Afropolitan roots in the urban jungle.

The next edition of the International Hall of Gala Ciders will have many novelties and a bigger participation of worldwide cider mills.

Due to the presentations of the event we have been making across Europe as well as our presence in the main international cider fairs worldwide, with some months ahead of the IHGC / SISGA there are already many cider mills joining in. Year by year it’s growing in participation, so with many more to be confirmed, we can greet the cider mills from six different countries such as Germany, United Kingdom, France, Spain and of course Asturies. And for the very first time, Japan. For instance we will count with the presence of the cider mills Lion Ciders, Macgleo, Colemans Cider Company, Tamura Farm, as well as several Asturian cider mills who will strive to set a high standard.

The event will take place in Xixón from 29th of September to 1st of October and will include an Open Tasting Day, the SISGA Awards, a Gala Dinner and Sommelier’s day for professionals of the sector. This year promises to be one of the most successful ones in the seven years of history of this event, with a schedule full of activities already confirmed, including traditional meals, visit to industrial Asturian cider mills, traditional cider bars and many cultural activities. A three-day program with the chance of many extra activities and visits for those who would like to stay more days and know better the Asturian cider culture in all its features.

Among the novelties of this year, there is the 1st Meeting of Journalists and Specialized Bloggers, which will deepen into the informative treatment of cider in the international frame. Apart of it the Gala Dinner will be preceded by an original activity linking cider and high gastronomy, that for now we keep as a surprise.

We remind that the number of vacancies to participate is limited, so we encourage the interested cider mills left to join in as soon as possible.

We understand that jurnalists are the ones in charge of spreading the cider culture, both information and new trends, which has always been a prioritty among the IHGC’s objectives.

The meeting will be presided over by Estíbaliz Urquiola, a journalist who graduated as an Expert in Gastronomic and Nutritional Journalism, and a journalist from LA SIDRA, will have a cost of € 50, and the program is as follows:

LA SIDRA.- The three instense days of the VI SISGA/IHGC were useful to put together effortsThe three intense days of the VI SISGA/IHGC were useful to put together efforts and generate synergies aiming for the recognition of high quality ciders being made all along Europe. From Thursday 29th of September some of the cider makers and delegates coming from countries like Denmark or Poland and from the state like from Tenerife or Catalonia got to see how our traditional beverage was made at JR Cider Mill. Then 20 of the participants went to the Cider District of El Llanu to know first hand the Asturian cider culture in Xixón.

On the next day and officially the first one of the event, Castañón Cider Mill was the scenario in which the tastings for the international jury of the SISGA 2016 Awards took place. There a jury composed by 20 professionals from the different countries attending tasted the different varieties of cider: sparkling -brut, sweet, demy-dry, rosé- perry, ice cider, cider liquor, cider brandy, 1/3 format ciders and the most original ciders.

That day in the afternoon there was the Gala Dinner in which the chef Alejandro Fernández prepared a menu of innovative dishes to harmonize with the wide range of possibilities that cider offers for pairing, ingredient and main part of the whole table and the chances for special pairing within a great variety of products.

On Saturday 1st of October there was the Open Tasting for the public of the ciders participating in the SISGA at Colexata San Juan Bautista from 12 to 9 hours. Besides its highlighted international character, it was particularly interesting to deepen inside the Asturian cider culture recognized as Good of Cultural Interest and declared Institutional Beverage by Xixón’s City Hall. It was also an excellent display since there were ciders that prove the worth of cider to be recognized as World Intangible Heritage by the UNESCO, yet in process.

The last part of this hall was the Sommelier Day that took place at the El Duque Cider Mill. It was a moment for true meeting among cider makers and professionals of the sector in which some topics were discussed such as the different elaboration systems and the various organoleptic features of European ciders. A space to strengthen and encourage international bonds and get cider to reach the great recognition it deserves due to its high quality, sometimes not enough valued in comparison to other beverages.
