Cider begins in the orchard
On Wednesday 23 September, as part of the SISGA’26 complementary programme, a free visit will take place at Finca El Gallinal, a farm specialising in the cultivation and study of cider apples, located between the municipalities of Gijón and Llanera.
The farm covers a total of 40 hectares, 28 of which are planted, with approximately 22,000 apple trees and a collection of 45 varieties. Of these, 28 are recognised by the Sidra de Asturias Protected Designation of Origin, while another 17 are foreign varieties used for demonstration and comparative study.
The activity will offer a walk through the orchard and an introduction to the diversity of shapes, aromas, flavours and characteristics shown by the different apples before they reach the cider mill.
At the heart of the visit, there will be a guided tasting of between 15 and 20 apple varieties. The selection will depend on the state of the harvest, choosing those that have reached the appropriate stage of ripeness on that date. This will allow each variety to be tasted when it best expresses its qualities.
It will be a unique opportunity to compare different types of apple directly, understand their importance in cider making and discover the varietal richness behind every bottle.
